GUWAHATI, 30 Sep: Arunachal writer Wanggo Socia's acclaimed Hindi novel, "Meera: Ek Safar," translated into Assamese by renowned writer and translator Dr. Barnali Das, was officially launched at the Guwahati Press Club on Wednesday to commemorate International Translation Day.
Eminent and award-winning writers and translators from Assam, Odisha and other states were present on the occasion.
The translation marks a significant chapter in the literary history of Arunachal Pradesh.
After the era of oral literature, it was the Assamese language that gave Arunachal Pradesh its first written literary identity through legends such as late Lummer Dai and Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi, whose works received national acclaim. Their writings have been widely translated from Assamese into Hindi, English and other languages.
Today, the journey has come full circle as a novel by an Arunachal writer, originally written in Hindi, has entered the Assamese literary sphere, further strengthening the literary bridge between the two neighbouring states that have long celebrated each other's stories.
The first edition of "Meera: Ek Safar" sold out within a month of its release, and the novel is now in its second edition.
Wanggo Socia is a poet, writer and scholar from Tirap district. He teaches Hindi literature at Government Model Degree College, Kanubari, in Longding district. He writes in Nocte, Hindi and English and has been closely associated with the Sahitya Akademi, the Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society and several other literary organisations working to nurture literature and literary communities.
In his address, Wanggo shared his journey as a writer and spoke about how his novel found its way into the hearts of readers, becoming part of wider literary dialogue and discourse. He also recited a Nocte poem as a tribute to the people of Arunachal Pradesh. (DIPR)
