ITANAGAR, 8 Sep: The Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Women Welfare Society (APCWWS) has called for a fair, impartial and evidence-based investigation into the incidents of 3 and 4 September in Bordumsa in Changlang district, including the allegations of firing, assault, intimidation, obstruction, stone-pelting and damage to property.
The society in a release on Tuesday said, "Accountability should be based on evidence and individual responsibility, rather than collective blame." It also asked the authorities to record the testimonies of women electors too.
While urging the district administration, police, electoral authorities and civil society to look beyond the violence of 3 September and recognise its gendered consequences, the APCWWS appealed to the authorities to ensure safe and orderly arrangements for all future SIR hearings, with particular attention to the safety and dignity of women, elderly persons, and other vulnerable electors.
It also called for "timely and adequate notice" of any rescheduled hearing, recognising the domestic and caregiving responsibilities carried by many women, besides protection against intimidation, harassment and threats directed at electors appearing before electoral authorities, adequate waiting facilities, and drinking water and basic amenities during future SIR hearings.
