AHV&DD dept presents dairy, poultry roadmap to DCM
ITANAGAR, 7 Jul: With the state government aiming to reduce dependence on imported dairy products and achieve self-sufficiency in livestock production, the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHV&DD) Department on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive roadmap for the dairy and poultry sectors before Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.
The high-level presentation, led by Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, provided a detailed review of the department’s performance, strategic roadblocks, recommendations of the high-level task force, and action plans designed to make the state self-reliant in dairy and poultry production.
During the meeting, the departmental officials emphasised the need for urgent government intervention in the dairy sector and highlighted the progress made towards its targets.
The officials presented detailed figures on milk production, revenue generation and future projections, while stressing that the state’s growing demand for milk, particularly from paramilitary forces stationed across Arunachal Pradesh, can be met through well-planned infrastructure expansion.
The department identified the absence of an integrated cold chain network as one of the biggest constraints affecting dairy development. It also emphasised the need for milk collection and chilling facilities, transportation vehicles, distribution networks, and other essential infrastructure to ensure timely supply across the state.
The officials informed the DCM that with strategic planning, institutional support and proposed memorandums of understanding with dairy cooperatives, the state’s dairy sector has the potential to achieve its production targets.
The presentation also highlighted the department’s continued focus on animal health, stating that livestock healthcare and disease prevention remain central to its development strategy. As an example of its achievements, the department informed that Arunachal Pradesh has recorded one of the highest livestock vaccination drives in the country, reflecting its commitment to safeguarding animal health while expanding production.
Addressing the meeting, Mein called for a critical assessment of past initiatives that failed to deliver the desired outcomes.
“We need to find out the reasons for our failures,” he said, recalling several attempts made over the years that did not achieve lasting success.
Stressing the need for a fresh approach, the DCM urged the department to develop a sustainable and practical model that can make the state self-sufficient in dairy production.
He encouraged officers to develop a robust and workable model for the dairy and poultry sectors, and assured them that the department’s proposals would be accorded the highest priority by the government.
Speaking on the occasion, Wangsu expressed confidence in the department’s ability to deliver measurable results. He noted that despite the immense potential of the dairy and poultry sectors, growth in several regions has remained below expectations due to inadequate planning and the absence of a clear strategic roadmap.
He said the department is now pursuing a result-oriented approach focused on scientific planning, infrastructure development, institutional partnerships,and effective implementation to unlock the sector’s full potential and reduce the state’s dependence on imports.
The meeting was attended by AHV&DD Secretary YVVJ Rajshekhar, Director Dr Danjan Longri, planning & investment adviser RK Sharma, and other senior officers of the AHV&DD and the Planning & Investment Departments.
