NAMSAI, 8 Sep: A two-day national conference on 'Medicinal Plants, Natural Products and Indian System of Medicine (NCMP 2026)' commenced at the Arunachal University of Studies (AUS) here on Tuesday.
The conference is being jointly organised by the AUS and V Sivaram Research Foundation (VSRF), Bengaluru. It is focused on scientific research, conservation of biodiversity, documentation of traditional knowledge, innovation, and development of sustainable and accessible healthcare solutions.
The conference began with the release of the National Conference on Medicinal Plants (NCMP) 2026 Abstract Book, which comprises a compilation of research contributions.
VSRF president Prof V Sivaram in his address underlined the enormous potential of India's traditional knowledge systems, and stressed the need to connect this knowledge with contemporary scientific approaches.
AUS Pro-Chancellor Vishva Lochan underscored the deep historical roots and holistic philosophy of the Indian systems of medicine, highlighting their relevance to sustainable healthcare. He emphasised on Arunachal Pradesh' rich biological and cultural diversity as a vital area for research, and called for interdisciplinary studies that integrate traditional wisdom with modern science to ensure responsible use of natural resources for future generations.
Namsai Deputy Commissioner Lobsang Tsering highlighted Arunachal's exceptional biological and cultural richness, noting its thousands of plant species and diverse tribal traditions. He emphasised the importance of responsibly documenting and scientifically validating indigenous medical practices, which hold significant potential for sustainable research and healthcare innovation.
AUS Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajeya Jha highlighted humanity's long reliance on medicinal plants and their enduring value for modern scientific inquiry. He emphasised the importance of academic collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and creating opportunities for young scholars, while urging universities to foster socially relevant and scientifically rigorous research that contributes to innovative healthcare solutions.
