NEW DELHI, 9 Sep: The North East Youth Congress Coordination Committee (NEYCCC) has strongly condemned the killing of Manipuri guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh in New Delhi and demanded a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident.
Expressing profound grief over the death of a talented son of Manipur, NEYCCC chairman Tarh Johny said the incident had caused deep anguish among the people of Manipur and the wider Northeast community.
"His death has caused deep anguish among the people of Manipur and the wider Northeast community. Every person found responsible must be brought to justice in accordance with the law," Johny said in a press statement issued on Wednesday.
"We do not want revenge. We want justice. We want accountability, and we want an assurance that no other family from the Northeast should have to face such a tragedy," he said.
Johny conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends and members of the musical fraternity in Manipur, and urged the authorities to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.
He also expressed serious concern over the safety and security of people from the Northeast who live, study and work in the national capital.
Calling upon the Delhi government and Delhi police to take immediate and concrete measures, Johny said there was an urgent need to restore a sense of security and confidence among the Northeast community in Delhi.
He demanded increased police patrolling in vulnerable localities, prompt action on complaints and threats, and strict enforcement of the law against racial abuse, intimidation, discrimination and violence targeting people from the Northeast.
"People from the Northeast contribute to the social, cultural and economic life of the national capital. They must be able to live and work in Delhi without fear or discrimination," Johny said.
The NEYCCC further urged the authorities to closely monitor areas where people from the Northeast reside and work, strengthen mechanisms for reporting incidents of harassment, and ensure that victims and their families receive timely institutional support.
The committee said the killing should not be treated merely as an isolated criminal incident and called for a thorough probe into all possible circumstances surrounding the death.
It also appealed to the people of the Northeast to remain united and vigilant while maintaining peace and allowing the law to take its course.
