MECHUKHA, 28 Sep: Medziphema (Nagaland)-based National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM) conducted a three-day field programme on mithun-cattle hybrids from 26 to 28 September here in Shi-Yomi district, during which more than 100 biological samples were collected for further genetic and scientific analysis.

During the programme, a team of scientists from the NRCM carried out systematic field-level identification, phenotypic characterisation and biological sample collection from mithun, mithun-cattle crossbreds and related cattle populations.

The information generated through the study is expected to contribute to evidence-based conservation, breeding and sustainable management strategies for mithun husbandry in Northeast India, while supporting the long-term interests of mithun farmers and the conservation of this important indigenous genetic resource, the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmer Federation (JMMFF) stated in a release.

The programme was undertaken under the DBT-funded project, 'Genetic and Phenotypic Characterization of Mithun-Cattle Hybrids for Sustainable Mithun Husbandry in Northeast India',with the objective of generating scientific information on the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of mithun-cattle crossbred populations.

The field activities were conducted by scientist Dr Harshit Kumar and senior scientist Dr KK Khate, in coordination with District Veterinary Officer (i/c) Dr Jumter Tali and JMMFF chairman Tadang Tamut.

Veterinary Officer Dr Dengum Geyi also provided active support during field identification, animal assessment and sample collection.

The field programme was conducted in collaboration with the JMMFF and the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development, GoAP.
