KHONSA, 29 Jun: Two insurgents belonging to the NSCN-K (Nikki Sumi) faction surrendered voluntarily before security forces and the police here in Tirap district on Sunday.

Acting on specific intelligence about the presence of insurgents in the general area of Kheti, the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles launched an operation.

 During the course of the operation, the two insurgents laid down their arms and surrendered before the security forces, according to an Assam Rifles release.

The surrendered insurgents have been identified as self-styled lieutenant Longmo Konyak (32), a resident of Phomching in Nagaland’s Mon district, and self-styled sergeant Maj Naikai Wangsu (23), a resident of Chanu village in Longding district.

Two pistols with magazines, eight live rounds, two mobile phones with SIM cards and one Aadhaar card were recovered from them.

The surrendered militants, along with the recovered items, were handed over to the Khonsa police for completion of legal formalities and further processing under the government’s rehabilitation policy for surrendered insurgents.

The Assam Rifles reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security and normalcy in the region while continuing to encourage more misguided youths to embrace the path of peace, development and nation-building. (DIPRO)
