NAMSAI, 21 Jul: The Namsai police have arrested the driver of a Maruti Suzuki WagonR in connection with the recent firing incident in Lal Pahar here, in which a 29-year-old woman sustained firearm injuries.
The driver was arrested based on the initial investigation conducted by a special investigation team (SIT) which was constituted to probe the incident. The WagonR had reportedly been found under suspicious circumstances at the location where the firing took place.
The SIT, led by DSP Kengo Dirchi, has seized all relevant biological, ballistic, and other material evidence. The seized items have been properly labelled, sealed, and preserved in accordance with the law.
“The seized Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been thoroughly examined by forensic experts, and all exhibits are being forwarded to the forensic science laboratory for scientific examination,” informed Namsai SP Sangey Thinley.
The SP said also that the injured woman is in stable condition and is currently out of danger.
On 17 July, the Namsai police received information that a woman had sustained firearm injuries during the incident. After receiving initial treatment at the district hospital in Namsai, she was referred to Dibrugarh in Assam for advanced medical care under police escort.
A day later, the Assam Rifles submitted a written complaint at the Namsai police station in connection with a counter-insurgency operation. Soon after, rumours began circulating on social media, claiming that the woman had been injured during the Assam Rifles’ counter-insurgency operation.
The SP said the investigation is being carried out from all possible angles to ensure that no evidence is overlooked, and that the true facts and circumstances surrounding the incident are brought to light.
“The investigation is progressing on scientific lines with the assistance of forensic, ballistic, biological, and electronic evidence,” he added.
“Namsai police appeals to the public not to spread rumours or unverified information regarding the incident. Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses,” the SP said.
