ITANAGAR, 9 Jul: Rajya Sabha MP Tai Tagak on Thursday urged the central government to provide a special package for relief, rehabilitation, and restoration work in the severely landslide- and flood-affected six districts of the state.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the highway in Papum Pare district connecting the state capital with several other districts, Tagak said that Arunachal Pradesh is passing through a tragic period as several districts have been badly affected by the recent calamities.
He said that six to seven people have lost their lives, while some are still missing. “Many others are injured. More than 95,000 people have been affected by the recent natural disasters, and the lives and properties of people residing in various districts have suffered extensive damages,” he said.
“Several roads and bridges have been washed away, while more than 70,000 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land have been affected. Livestock has also been lost in the floods. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a relief and rehabilitation package for Arunachal Pradesh,” the MP said.
Tagak said that the state government is taking care of the immediate needs of the affected people by providing relief assistance. However, he said that he would raise the issue in Parliament and soon meet the union ministers concerned to seek additional support.
He commended the central government for sending an inter-ministerial team to assess the present situation in various districts of the state.
Acknowledging that full flood-related restoration work will take time, Tagak urged the people of the state to remain alert, “as the monsoon season is expected to continue for more than two months.”
Earlier, Tagak inspected the power house area and its arterial road in the Power House Colony of Pare Hydroelectric Project at Hoj, visited Luksin, Yabi-II, Hoj and other local areas under Toru circle of Sagalee subdivision, inspected the Trans-Arunachal Highway (TAH) connecting Itanagar with several other districts from Doimukh up to the main block point in Papum Pare district. He directed the Highway Department to immediately construct a Bailey bridge “until a permanent bridge is contracted for the movement of essential commodities for the general public of Keyi Panyor, Lower Subansiri, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, Kamle and Upper Subansiri districts.”
Tagak was accompanied by Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Lobsang Tsering, Sagalee ADC Kipa Raja, panchayat leaders, and heads of departments of Papum Pare district during the inspection.
