TAWANG, 19 Jun: In a move aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable consumption practices, the Tawang district administration has issued an order banning single-use PET (polyethylene terephthalate) water bottles.

The order, issued by Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo on Tuesday, said that sale, distribution and supply of single-use plastic drinking water bottles with a capacity of less than 2 litres shall be prohibited within the district with effect from 1 July. The order applies to all government offices, educational institutions, commercial establishments, event organisers, hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors, and the public.

The order directed event organisers, government departments, educational institutions, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments to make suitable alternative arrangements such as water dispensers, refill stations, water filters, or larger-capacity water containers.

It further cautioned that surprise inspections will be conducted by officials of the district administration and the departments concerned to ensure compliance. Any violation of the order will attract action under the applicable provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Arunachal Pradesh Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Bye-laws, 2023, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, including seizure of prohibited items and imposition of penalties as prescribed by law, the order read.

The administration has sought cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the initiative.
