ITANAGAR, 19 Jul: Assam-based student body Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) urged members of the Galo community to intervene to de-escalate tension along the interstate boundary at Madhupur village in Tarajan in Assam’s Dhemaji district, and Gérmé village in Kangku circle of Lower Siang district, following a ‘minor’ scuffle and an altercation between a resident from Germe village and some youths of Tarajan.
In a letter addressed to Galo Welfare Society, Galo Youth Organisation, Galo Students’ Union and Galo Mising Coordination Committee, the TMPK’s external affairs secretary Reedeep Jack Doley stated that the incident reportedly occurred on 18 July after a tractor was used to plough a village road in Madhupur, Assam, “without the consent and approval of the people of Tarajan.”
The TMPK stated that the incident has created a tense and volatile situation in the border area.
“As responsible citizens of both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, we believe it is important to address this matter immediately through peaceful discussion and mutual understanding to prevent any further escalation,” the letter read.
The Assam-based students’ body urged to help control the situation and restore peace through a joint discussion and amicable settlement at the earliest.
“Let us work together to uphold the age-old brotherhood between the Mising and Galo communities,” Doley added.
