ITANAGAR, 19 Jul: Arunachal Pradesh MMA star Sonam Zomba defeated Chathuri Siriwardana by unanimous decision to become the first-ever Karma Fight League (KFL) world strawweight champion.
Zomba won the inaugural KFL World Strawweight Championship in a K-1 kickboxing bout at the SLECC (Sri Lanka Exhibition & Convention Centre), Colombo, Sri Lanka on 18 July.
Headlining the main event, Zomba secured a victory with her strong, composed performance.
The initial announcements mentioned Pakistan’s Bushra Akhtar against Zomba, but the actual matchup was against the Sri Lankan fighter.
Her victory adds to her recent success, including defending her MFN (Matrix Fight Night)strawweight world title earlier this year.
Zomba is from Tawang, and fights out of Bidang MMA.
Her pro MMA record stands strong (around 8-1), and this kickboxing title win highlights her versatility.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated Zomba on her stellar performance. In a congratulatory message, Khandu termed Zomba “Bharat ki beti(India’s daughter).”
“She went in, fought hard, and came out with the title belt, defeating Sri Lanka’s Chathuri Siriwardana. That’s what winners do,” said Khandu, wishing Zomba more victories.
