PASIGHAT, 28 Sep: The Hirit Banggo Development Committee of Rumgong in Siang district has enforced a 24-hour Rumgong bandh from early Monday morning to protest the inordinate delay in completing the construction of the 22-km Boleng to Rumgong PWD road.

Supporting the bandh, various business organisations, transport operators and local residents joined the committee's road march to voice their concern over alleged negligence by PWD officials, and inaction by the local administration and the construction company entrusted with restructuring the road.

The protesters marched through Rumgong town, shouting slogans against the PWD authority, and staged a dharna in front of the offices of the PWD EE and the Rumgong ADC.

As per reports, shops and other business establishments remained closed for the day, and vehicles stayed off the road. However, essential services have been exempted from the purview of the bandh.

The Rs 50 crore road project was sanctioned in 2021, and the construction work is being carried out by GTC company.

Of the 22-km road, about 12 km falls under the Boleng PWD division and the remaining stretch under the Rumgong PWD division.

Reportedly, the implementing agency has so far developed only a 10.5-km stretch on the Boleng side.
