Editor,

The recent APPSC notification making commercial mathematics mandatory for the preliminary examination of finance & accounts officer (FAO), treasury officer (TO), and sub-treasury officer (STO) has created widespread confusion among aspirants.

While the notification specifies a 200-mark objective test in commercial mathematics, it does not clarify whether the prelims will only comprise commercial mathematics or also include general knowledge and English.

This omission has sparked widespread confusion among aspirants. Many had been preparing under the assumption that the preliminary stage would test a broader range of subjects, including general knowledge and English, as is common in competitive recruitment examinations. The latest notification, however, neither confirms nor rules out their inclusion.

In the absence of an official clarification, speculation has replaced certainty, forcing candidates to prepare without knowing the actual examination pattern.

Moreover, if the preliminary examination is based solely on commercial mathematics, it could give an undue advantage to candidates with a mathematics background, raising concerns over fairness and equal opportunity.

As a constitutional recruitment body, the APPSC must ensure transparency and clarity in its examination process. An immediate clarification on the exact preliminary exam pattern and syllabus is essential to restore confidence among aspirants and ensure that merit – not ambiguity – determines success.
