ITANAGAR, 9 Jul: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has vehemently condemned the alleged brutal murder of a woman by her ex-husband in Aalo in West Siang district on Monday.

The commission appealed to the state government to look into the matter, ensure free and fair investigation of the case, and “book the culprit(s) as per the law.”

“The APSCW condemns all kinds of violence inflicted against women,” the commission said, and requested the general public to cooperate in the police investigation, so that justice is delivered to the deceased and her family members.

“There are rising crimes due to overtime opening of clubs, pubs and bars,” the APSCW said, and appealed to the authorities concerned to strictly regulate and enforce suitable timings for the closing and opening of such places across the state.

The commission further said: “Under Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, revealing the identity or publishing the picture of a child victim, witness, or child in conflict with the law is strictly prohibited across all media and communication platforms. Any person contravening the provisions shall be punishable. Therefore, it is an appeal to the media fraternity to take caution not to reveal the face of the victim’s family, especially if it is a minor.”

The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society’s(APWWS) West Siang district unit has also strongly condemned the alleged murder of the 25-year-old woman by her former husband.

According to the police, the accused, identified 45-year-old Todak Ngomdir, surrendered the next day and is currently in police custody.

Reportedly, the couple had separated only a month back.

Expressing deep shock and grief over the incident, the district unit stated that no individual has the right to take another person’s life, irrespective of the circumstances.

It said that violence can never be justified, and called upon society to collectively stand against all forms of violence against women.

The APWWS West Siang unit extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul. It also urged the investigating authorities to conduct a fair, impartial and expeditious investigation, so that justice is delivered in accordance with the law.

The district unit further informed in a communiqué that it is closely following the progress of the case and will continue to monitor the investigation to ensure that justice is served.

Expressing anguish over the incident, APWWS central executive committee (CEC) president Jarjum Ete urged everyone to wake up to the problem of women facing abuse in the hands of men.

“The whole society, everyone in the state, has to wake up to the problem. This is why we should never let cases of domestic violence pass. People can go off the tangent. And in this particular case, she had to face abuse even after her separation. Women are not able to secure themselves even after coming out of an abusive marriage,” she said.

“We have to absolutely condemn it and demand exemplary punishment. Everyone in the society should condemn this,” Ete added.
