ITANAGAR, 17 Aug: The cage is set to return to the Arunachal capital as homegrown mixed martial arts promotion ATURTO gears up for its 11th event on August 22, with two high-stakes Flyweight Grand Prix semi-finals topping a packed fight card.

ATURTO 4.2, to be held at the Artisan-cum-Handicrafts Exhibition Centre in Chimpu, will see Lalngaihawma square off against Diyo Rimo in the main event, while Lian Nun takes on Limasunep Imchen in the co-main event.

More than just bragging rights will be on the line. Winners of the two bouts will punch their tickets to the Flyweight Grand Prix final scheduled for December.

The main card will also feature Chinglemba Ningomba against Yumter Tapodia, Amit Amaurya versus Fahad Khan and Rahul Thakuri against Darren Kharshandy.

Five more contests - Vikash Gupta vs Kenjo Lollen, Thoidingjam Goroba vs Biri Nikum, Sajal Chaudhary vs Reri Dedu, Narang Napa vs Lamgu Nilo and Bubul Taid vs Miding Pada - will make up the undercard.

Behind the punches, takedowns and submissions, however, is a bigger story - an attempt to build a platform where aspiring fighters can chase professional MMA careers without paying for the opportunity to compete.

ATURTO co-founder Higio Taarak said the promotion emerged at a time when MMA was still finding its feet in Arunachal and financial constraints often stood between talented fighters and the cage.

"We had financial restraints initially, as MMA was new in Arunachal," Taarak said.

That experience shaped ATURTO's approach. Unlike platforms where fighters may have to pay registration charges, the promotion does not charge its competitors an entry fee.

"There's no registration fee for the fighters. We invest in our fighters rather," he said.

Taarak said the aim goes beyond building ATURTO's own brand. The promotion wants fighters to be seen, build connections and eventually attract sponsors or move on to bigger national and international stages.

"Through ATURTO, we wanted people to know about our fighters. They dedicate their life to this, training all day and improving their skills," he said.

"Our motive is to connect the fighters, so people know them, connect to them and they get more sponsors. It's not only ATURTO; we want them to get more opportunities ahead."

Founded by Taarak and Hage Omo in 2023 after conversations at a local MMA gym, ATURTO - which means "Be Strong" in Nyishi - has grown rapidly from a local initiative into a platform attracting fighters from different parts of India.

The promotion has staged 10 events in three years, with its founders hoping to establish a sustainable professional MMA circuit in Arunachal Pradesh.

There are already signs that the platform can become a stepping stone to bigger arenas. Nazareth, who competed twice under the ATURTO banner, subsequently signed with ONE Championship.

For ATURTO, the August 22 showdown is therefore about more than finding two Flyweight Grand Prix finalists. It is another round in its larger fight - putting Arunachal's MMA talent on the map and giving fighters a cage where opportunity, rather than financial barriers, determines how far they can go.
