POMA, 15 Sep: For the first time in the state, the lone women's government degree college of Arunachal Pradesh, Bini Yanga Government Women's College (BYGWC), conducted elections to the students' union on Tuesday at the college campus.
The process, held as per the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, started on 8 September and concluded with peaceful polling and counting on Tuesday.
Jarmani Nyokir was elected unopposed as general secretary, while all other secretarial posts also went uncontested. Jeena Natung won the assistant general secretary post by a margin of 21 votes.
The BYGWC was established in 2014, and had been functioning from its temporary campus in Lekhi for more than a decade. The college shifted to its permanent campus in Poma in January this year.
The conduct of the student union election at a women's college has been hailed as a significant step towards promoting leadership among women students.
"This is the first such election after the college shifted to its permanent campus in Poma. It is a historic occasion as ours is the lone women's college in the state, and we have supported student union activities as per the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines. The students deserve appreciation for maintaining an orderly and democratic atmosphere throughout the election process," said an official of the college.
