The Department of Research, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, recently launched a year-long celebration, marking its 75th anniversary, in Itanagar.
The department traces its origin to the appointment of the first research officer in 1951, and has since completed 75 years of service to the state. Over the decades, one of its core functions has been the documentation of Arunachal’s history and heritage. The department has played a significant role in preserving and promoting the state’s rich cultural legacy.
It has contributed to archaeological research and preservation activities, supported museum development, and undertaken important work in philology, including the study and documentation of languages and linguistic traditions. The department has also been actively engaged in publishing and documenting the diverse traditions, customs, and historical records of Arunachal.
As the department celebrates this significant milestone, it also faces greater responsibilities. At the heart of its mission must remain research that is grounded in truth, facts, and scholarly integrity, free from external influences and changing circumstances. At a time when history is often being rewritten and, at times, distorted, the role of the department assumes even greater importance. Its responsibility is not merely to preserve the past but to chronicle the history of the state and its people with honesty, objectivity, and dedication.
