NERIST Director Prof Narendranath S reportedly resigned on 29 May under controversial circumstances, even as the NERIST Research Scholars’ Association (NRSA) condemned the events leading to his resignation. The resignation came shortly after the suspension of the registrar and the assistant registrar. The suspensions were reportedly linked to allegations of irregularities in the Recruitment Rules (RRs) 2022 for non-teaching staff.

The current crisis has its roots in the student agitation of November 2025, during which allegations of recruitment irregularities, nepotism and administrative inefficiency were raised.

The NRSA alleged that the director was subjected to intimidation and coercion by certain individuals and student organisations. According to the association, he was compelled to submit his resignation under pressure.

Research scholars stated that the episode has negatively affected the morale of students, faculty members, researchers and staff. The NRSA also warned that the prevailing atmosphere of fear and uncertainty could disrupt ongoing research activities.

The association appealed to all stakeholders to refrain from engaging in politics that could harm students and the institution.

Controversy is not new to the institute. The NERIST has previously experienced prolonged vacancies in the director’s position, creating administrative challenges. These latest developments have only added to the recurring disruptions faced by the institute over the years.

The NERIST must strive for greater transparency, institutional stability and permanent leadership to ensure its continued growth and academic progress.
