TAWANG, 23 Jul: The Tawang Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), in collaboration with Varanasi (UP)-based Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), conducted frontline demonstrations on high-yielding vegetable varieties across seven villages of Tawang district.

The programmes were organised at Khimney (13 July), Changprong (14 July), Kyidphel (15 July), Themghar (16 July), Woongla (20 July), Sazo (21July), and Shakti (22 July), witnessing enthusiastic participation of local farmers.

During the technical sessions, KVK agronomist CK Singh sensitised the farmers to soil health management, the importance of natural farming, incorporation of leguminous crops in cropping systems to sustain soil fertility, and scientific vermicomposting techniques for enhancing long-term soil productivity.

Plant protection scientist Lakshmipriya Borahdelivered practical sessions on integrated pest management, highlighting eco-friendly methods of controlling pests and diseases. She also demonstrated seed treatment using the biofungicide Trichoderma viride to protect crops from seed-borne diseases and improve crop productivity.

The programme was coordinated by horticulture expert Dr Abhimanyu Chaturvedi, who guided the farmers on scientific cultivation practices of garden pea, carrot, long bean, faba bean, cole crops, and other vegetables. He encouraged the farmers to adopt improved high-yielding varieties to enhance productivity, increase farm income, and strengthen household food security.

To facilitate immediate adoption of the demonstrated technologies, the farmers were provided with improved seeds of garden pea, long bean, faba bean, carrot, cauliflower, water spinach, and rajma, along with essential agricultural inputs such as vermi beds, spades, and biopesticides, supplied with support from the IIVR.
