One Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were reportedly injured in a suspected militant attack near Nampong Nallah in Nampong Circle, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, recently. The targeted personnel belonged to the 21 Assam Rifles and were patrolling an area where India-Myanmar border fencing work is underway. Security forces intensified operations and surveillance in the area following the attack, particularly along the international border.
Preliminary reports suggested the possible involvement of NSCN (K-YA). The India-Myanmar border in Changlang remains a sensitive security zone, with insurgent groups reportedly operating across the international boundary, making patrolling and border-fencing activities particularly vulnerable to attacks.
The area remains prone to violent incidents, which also reflects that the area is not secured, while the porous border has only added to making movement easier for the various factions of the NSCN as well as the ULFA-I, which have carried out various forms of attacks in the area. The groups have even attacked the AR inside their own campus. Will the authorities make their own areas more secure so that citizens feel safer too? The casualty should alarm the authorities about the security of the very people who are responsible for providing security to the state and the people.
