ITANAGAR, 29 Sep: An Assam Rifles (AR) jawan was killed and four others were reportedly injured after suspected militants attacked a patrol team along the India-Myanmar border in Changlang district early Tuesday, officials and sources said.
The attack took place at around 6:30 am near Nampong Nallah in Nampong circle when personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling an area where border fencing work is underway.
Sources said suspected militants opened fire on the patrol team, killing havildar Jangkhokai Kuki (42) and injuring four others. The injured personnel were evacuated for medical treatment, while details about their condition are awaited.
The Assam Rifles later confirmed Kuki's death and paid tribute to him for making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
"Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General Assam Rifles & All Ranks of Assam Rifles pay solemn tribute to Hav Jangkhokai Kuki who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at Changlang,
Arunachal Pradesh on 29 Sep 2026 and offer deep condolences to the family of our Brave Soldier," the force said in a post on X.
It added that the director general and all ranks of the Assam Rifles stand firmly with the bereaved family.
Security forces intensified operations in the area following the attack and stepped up surveillance along the international border.
Preliminary reports pointed to the suspected involvement of militants belonging to the NSCN (K-YA), though there was no official confirmation about the identity of the attackers.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said he received information about the incident and directed the officer-in-charge of the Changlang police station to gather details.
"We have received information about the incident that occurred along the IMB (India-Myanmar Border) and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect all information related to it," Padu said, without divulging further details.
The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district has remained sensitive due to the movement of insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.
