HAWAI, 8 Sep: The Anjaw Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) conducted a two-day field monitoring-cum-survey programme in Chingwinty, Changung, Sung, Watong, and Kamdi villages in Hawai circle of Anjaw district on 7 and 8 September to assess the field performance and status of popcorn, maize, finger millet, and dhaincha.

The programme was undertaken with the objective of monitoring crop growth and development, assessing field-level management practices, identifying emerging production constraints, and interacting with farmers regarding their experiences and requirements.

During the field visit, the team led by KVK agronomist Khoisnam Naveen, along with agriculture economics expert Dr Soibam Peter Singh and land and water management engineering expert Ugarsain Sangwan monitored crop establishment, plant growth, nutrient management, weed incidence, pest and disease occurrence, soil moisture conditions and overall crop health. Special attention was given to popcorn and maize, which have considerable potential for promotion as alternative and remunerative crops in the district. The performance of finger millet was also assessed in relation to crop stand, growth and prevailing field conditions.

The team also surveyed dhaincha, an important green manure crop, which has been introduced for the first time in the district, to assess its establishment and potential for improving soil fertility and promoting sustainable nutrient management.

During interactions with farmers, information was collected on production constraints and farmers' perceptions regarding crop performance. The farmers were also sensitised to the importance of adopting improved agronomic practices, timely weed management, balanced nutrient application, and regular monitoring of pest and disease incidence. Technical guidance on protected cultivation, efficient management of land and water resources were also provided by the team.
