ITANAGAR, 27 Jul: Governor KT Parnaik, accompanied by MLA Tseten Chombay, visited the Sang-ngag Choekhor Dargyeling monastery, popularly known as Chilipam monastery, near Rupa in West Kameng district, on Sunday, and paid obeisance at the sacred Buddhist shrine.
A special prayer ceremony was conducted at the monastery for peace, prosperity, and well-being of all humanity.
The governor lauded the monastery for its invaluable contribution in preserving and promoting the rich Buddhist traditions, spiritual values, and cultural heritage of the region. He observed that monasteries such as Chilipam are far more than places of worship. “They are living institutions that nurture moral values, foster compassion, and serve as repositories of ancient wisdom that continue to guide society towards peace, harmony, and mutual respect,” he said.
Drawing from his extensive service in Buddhist regions, stretching from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, including Bhutan, the governor noted the profound influence of Buddhist institutions in strengthening social cohesion and promoting a culture of tolerance and understanding.
“Its distinctive architecture, sacred relics, vibrant monastic traditions, and serene surroundings attract devotees, pilgrims, scholars, and tourists from across India and abroad. Such heritage sites play an important role in promoting cultural tourism while deepening appreciation for the state’s diverse and enduring traditions,” Parnaik said.
He also interacted with the abbot of the monastery,Rimpoche Trulku Tenzin Jigme, who briefed him on the monastery’s initiatives in imparting spiritual education, preserving Buddhist teachings, and guiding young people towards a life rooted in discipline, compassion, and ethical values.
The governor appreciated these efforts and emphasised the importance of involving youths in preserving the state’s rich cultural and spiritual legacy.
Commissioner to Governor Pawan Kumar Sain, West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Dr Dilip Kumar Chetia, and SP DW Thungon, along with a host to Sherdukpen community leaders also accompanied the governor during his maiden visit to the monastery.
Nestled atop a picturesque hill about 15 kilometres from Rupa, Chilipam monastery stands as a symbol of spiritual harmony, cultural pride, and architectural grandeur.
Overlooking the majestic Eastern Himalayas, the monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity and reflection. Amidst the pristine natural beauty of the region, the monastery continues to inspire visitors with its message of peace, mindfulness, and harmonious coexistence, while serving as a beacon of Arunachal’s vibrant Buddhist heritage.
