NEW DELHI, 4 Oct: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly condemned the alleged attack on Kshirod Chandra Das, a member of the Odisha Journalists Union (OJU), and demanded an impartial, time-bound investigation and stringent legal action against those responsible.
According to a representation submitted by the OJU to the Odisha DGP on 30 September, Das, a local newspaper's block representative in Sarasakana block of Mayurbhanj district, was allegedly attacked by local mafias at Jamsola on the night of 27 September.
The OJU alleged that the attack was in retaliation for news reports published by him. Das sustained serious head injuries and later lodged a complaint at Jharpokharia Police Station, where a case was registered.
IJU president Geetartha Pathak expressed grave concern over the incident, saying violence against journalists for performing their professional duties was a serious threat to press freedom and democratic accountability.
IJU secretary-general Vinod Kohli demanded a thorough and impartial investigation to identify all those involved and ensure stringent legal action against the perpetrators. He also urged the authorities to provide adequate protection to Das and his family if any threat persists.
The IJU called upon the Odisha DGP to ensure that the investigation remains free from external interference and that all evidence, witness statements and the motive behind the attack are properly examined.
The union also expressed concern over alleged recurring incidents of violence and retaliation against journalists in Odisha and urged the state government to ensure a safe environment for journalists to work without fear or intimidation.
