KHONSA, 28 Jul: A joint team, led by MLA Wanglam Sawin, on Tuesday inspected the damaged stretch of the road near the Khonsa post office (PO) and decided to shift the post office temporarily to the old district & sessions court building.

The decision was taken in view of the hardships faced by daily commuters due to the deplorable condition of the road, Sawin said.

The temporary shift will facilitate construction of a diversion road and help restore smooth traffic movement, he said.

The district administration has issued evacuation order for residents living within the sinking zone and for the staff of the Khonsa post office, DC Badonlum Tawsik said.

He said also that the vacant court building will be renovated at the earliest to accommodate the post office and its staff.

The DC said that the temporary shift would enable the construction of an approximately 200-mtr diversion road, providing connectivity to Lazu block, Tutnu block, Kheti, Thinsa, and Lapnan villages, APSTS bus station, 36 Battalion CRPF, 44 Assam Rifles, and Government Higher Secondary School, Khonsa.

PWD EE Taro Jeram said that the road construction works are expected to be completed within two weeks, subject to government approval.

Postmaster Natmoi Wangno said that approval from the chief postmaster general is awaited to shift the office. He added that, considering the severe road damage, the Department of Posts has no objection to shifting the post office once the building is properly renovated and made ready for occupation. (DIPRO)
