TEZU, 21 Jul: A district-level NCORD meeting was held here in Lohit district on Tuesday to review issues relating to illegal poppy cultivation, drug abuse, enforcement under the NDPS Act, and rehabilitation of affected persons.
During the meeting, DSP Ojing Lego delivered a presentation on the current status of NDPS cases in the district. He informed that the situation has been improving owing to strict enforcement, sustained awareness activities, and cooperation from community-based organisations (CBOs).
He urged all stakeholders to take the issue seriously and discharge the responsibilities entrusted to them in a coordinated and timely manner.
Speaking on the occasion, Tezu CO Habung Modaemphasised that “meaningful change in society must begin with oneself.” He assured that the district administration would extend full support to all efforts aimed at curbing drug abuse and illegal poppy cultivation.
He further stated that stringent action would be initiated against anyone found involved in illegal poppy cultivation, and sought active cooperation of the gaon buras (GBs), observing that their grassroots experience and close interaction with local communities could play a vital role in identifying illegal activities and generating public awareness.
The GBs appreciated the efforts of the district administration and assured of their full cooperation. They also called for strong action against anyone found guilty of involvement in illegal poppy cultivation and drug-related activities.
During the programme, the winners of an essay competition organised in connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking were felicitated with certificates and awards.
The meeting also discussed the functioning and challenges of the de-addiction centre, destruction of illegal poppy crops, awareness programmes, rehabilitation measures, and other related issues. Emphasis was laid on coordinated action involving the administration, police, health authorities, enforcement agencies, GBs, CBOs and local communities.
The meeting was attended by the district medical officer, officials from the Health Department, Intelligence Bureau, Tax and Excise Department, GBs, and other stakeholders. (DIPRO)
