TAWANG, 22 Sep: The ongoing measures against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Tawang district were reviewed during a district-level NCORD committee meeting held at the deputy commissioner's office here on Tuesday.
Chairing the meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta emphasised the importance of timely information-sharing and cooperation among all stakeholders.
He informed that a roster of officers would shortly be prepared to ensure coordinated response alongside security agencies in substance- and drug-related cases.
The ADC commended the recent efforts of the Lungla police, in collaboration with the SSB and local villagers, in uprooting wild cannabis.
He asked the Agriculture Department to explore whether any safe and effective scientific or chemical method could be adopted for controlling or destroying wild cannabis growth.
The ADC requested paramilitary forces deployed in different parts of the district to extend cooperation to the district police and local communities in identifying, uprooting and destroying wild cannabis wherever found.
Addressing the members, Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang called upon all stakeholders to continue working in close coordination towards the shared goal of a drug-free Tawang. He requested all departments concerned and organisations to intimate the district police about awareness programmes on drug abuse being conducted across the district, so that such initiatives could be properly documented, reported to higher authorities, and reflected under the district's NCORD activities.
Referring to the abundant natural growth of wild cannabis in parts of the district, the SP stressed the need for continued vigilance. "The possibility of deliberate cultivation in isolated areas also needs to be closely monitored," the SP said.
DSP Togum Gonggo presented a detailed overview of activities undertaken by the district police and other NCORD members across Tawang district. He highlighted the destruction of wild cannabis and various enforcement, preventive and awareness measures being undertaken to curb the drug menace.
During open discussion, members shared suggestions and inputs for strengthening coordination, information-sharing, enforcement, and community participation in the fight against drugs.
Gonggo assured the members that the suggestions and inputs received during the meeting would be followed up and the progress reviewed in the next NCORD meeting.
He appealed for active participation of every section of society in the fight against drugs, stressing that achieving a drug-free Tawang requires collective responsibility, vigilance and sustained community cooperation. (DIPRO)
