The Students’ Union of NERIST (SUN) ended its hunger strike after receiving assurances that Director Prof Narendranath, who was forced to resign, will be reinstated.

The union launched an indefinite hunger strike against the alleged forced resignation of the NERIST director.

The institute, which has seen numerous protests over the years, was again forced into chaos after the resignation of Prof Narendranath.

The SUN had written to the NERIST Board of Management (BoM), demanding that it allow Prof Narendranath to complete his full five-year tenure as director.

The students, who say that the director was forced to resign, are seeking the release of the CCTV footage from the director’s chamber. It is alleged that a group of people entered the director’s office, pressuring him to submit his resignation.

Prof Narendranath’s resignation came just one day after suspension orders were issued against two NERIST officials who were accused of alleged irregularities and manipulation of the Recruitment Rules 2022 for non-teaching staff recruitment.

The NERIST can’t afford to be in and out of chaos. It really needs to clean up its act before it affects more students. The administration and governing body, as well as the ministry, have to find a mechanism to stop the never-ending unpredictability of the institute, which has been in the news more for the wrong reasons than for its academic achievements.
