The contingency staffers of the Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve (NNPTR) have not received their salaries for six months, from April to September. This delay has left around 200 contingency staffers, including those working under Project Tiger, severely affected.
The staff submitted a memorandum to the conservator of forests and field director on 12 October, demanding the payment of all pending salaries within 10 days. They have threatened to vacate their camps across the park, which covers an area of 1,985 sq km, if their dues are not paid within this deadline. Furthermore, the employees warned that they would adopt a 'No Pay, No Work' policy and organise peaceful, democratic protests if their demands are not met.
The delay in wage payment has been a recurring issue in Namdapha for years. Not receiving salaries on time heavily adds to the financial hardships of this already underpaid staff. The NTCA and the state government must find a permanent solution for these frontline workers, who serve as the backbone for maintaining the park across its vast and rugged terrain. Having to petition for what is legitimately due to them reflects poorly on the departments responsible for these frontline workers.
