RONO HILLS, 1 Jul: The Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) bid farewell to Deputy Librarian Dr. Dhananjay Kumar Pandey on his retirement on June 30 after rendering over 26 years of dedicated and distinguished service to the university.
Dr. Pandey, who joined RGU as Technical Assistant (Library) in 2000, was promoted as Assistant Librarian and later as Deputy Librarian.
During his illustrious career at RGU, he made immense contributions to the development, modernization, automation, and systematic management of the University Library, significantly strengthening its academic resources and services for faculty members, students, and research scholars.
Prior to joining Rajiv Gandhi University, Dr. Pandey served at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Miao, and the State Central Library, Arunachal Pradesh.
Among his notable professional achievements was his significant contribution to the systematic organisation, restoration, preservation, and cataloguing of several rare books housed at Raj Bhavan, Itanagar, thereby helping preserve valuable documentary heritage.
Widely admired for his professionalism, approachable nature, and commitment to academic service, Dr. Pandey earned the respect and affection of generations of students, research scholars, faculty members, and colleagues. His leadership and dedication played a pivotal role in strengthening library services and fostering an environment conducive to teaching, learning, and research.
To honour his remarkable career, the Rajiv Gandhi University Employees’ Association (RGUEA) organised a formal felicitation programme celebrating his successful superannuation.
The programme was attended by vice chancellor prof. S.K Nayak, registrar Dr. N. T. Rikam, finance officer prof. Otem Padung, along with officers, faculty members, staff, students, research scholars, and well-wishers.
Addressing the gathering, prof. Nayak lauded Dr. Pandey for his unwavering commitment, consistent performance, and invaluable contribution to the development and growth of the University Library over the past two and a half decades. He said that Dr. Pandey’s dedication and professionalism have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of library professionals.
Dr. Rikam appreciated Dr. Pandey’s sincerity, dedication, and mentorship of students and research scholars throughout his career. He acknowledged Dr. Pandey’s role in strengthening the University’s academic support system through efficient and user-friendly library services.
Prof. Padung commended Dr. Pandey’s exemplary work ethic, discipline, and integrity, which he consistently demonstrated throughout his professional journey. He extended his best wishes for a healthy, happy, and fulfilling post-retirement life.
Joint registrar Dr. David Pertin, deputy registrars Solung Sonam and Gomar Basar, RGUEA president Nich Bapu, and its general secretary E.K Sonar, also spoke on the occasion and recalled Dr. Pandey’s valuable contributions to the University.
Dr. Pandey’s distinguished professional journey has been recognised through several prestigious national and international honours.
In 2022, he received the Indian Librarian Pride Award on the occasion of National Librarians’ Day, organised under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM). The honour recognised him among the Top 75 pioneering library professionals of India for his distinguished and extraordinary contributions to the development of librarianship in India and abroad.
In 2026, he was conferred the prestigious Lifetime Contribution Award in Library Science during the International Conference on Knowledge Organisation in Academic Libraries (I-KOAL), held as part of an international seminar jointly organised by the Library Professional Association and Rajiv Gandhi University. The award recognised his lifelong dedication and outstanding contributions to the field of Library and Information Science.
