ZIRO, 7 Oct:  Detailed discussions were held on establishing long-term sustainable mechanisms for maintaining the Kley River, including riverbank beautification, development of suitable stretches into self-sustaining tourist spots, installation of dustbins and barricades, during a high-level coordination meeting at the district secretariat here in Lower Subansiri district on Wednesday.

The meeting, chaired by SDO-cum-DC in-charge Hage Tarung, was held to finalize plans for the upcoming annual 'Clean Kley River Mass Social Service 2026,' which is a calendar event.

During the meeting, Tarung briefed the participants on the background and vision of the initiative, stressing the importance of collective participation from Panchayat Raj Institution (PRI) members, local administrative departments, and key stakeholders.

He also highlighted the need to assign specific stretches of the river to respective ZPMs for sustained responsibility and long-term upkeep.

Presenting a review of previous editions, Apatani Youth Association (AYA) president Subu Oppo Sala proposed a revised multi-day programme spanning approximately 19 km of the Kley River.

Under this plan, preliminary cleaning and preparatory activities will be carried out from 8 to 12 November by AYA volunteers and hired labourers, culminating in a large-scale mass social service on 13 November, 2026.

Urban development and housing (UD&H) executive engineer Tai Sangkio assured the supply of gloves and polythene bags for the drive, while emphasizing the need for land protection and public amenities.

To ensure sustained cleanliness, AYA has been entrusted with monitoring the river, and strict penalties will be imposed on anyone found dumping waste or animal carcasses into the water.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to making Clean Kley River 2026 a highly organized, participatory, and sustainable community movement.

Among the prominent attendees, who supported the campaign were DFCSO Hage That, trade development officer Tai Arun, DSP Millo Lalyang, DYO Shaffali Yadav, ZPMs Rubu Tadi, Millo Tadu and Pura Pugang, besides representatives of ALSDYO, ITBP, local police, market community, senior students, and various government departments.
