JANG, 14 Jul: The Tawang Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) promoted scientific and sustainable farming practices among the local farmers here on Tuesday as part of a series of programme to commemorate the foundation day of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Addressing the gathering, KVK Head Dr Anjanand Tripathy highlighted the significant role played by the ICAR in transforming Indian agriculture through research, innovation, and technology dissemination.

He elaborated the ICAR’s contributions towards the development of agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, and animal husbandry, emphasising the importance of scientific interventions in improving farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring food security.

During the technical sessions, agronomist CK Singh delivered an informative lecture on the management of acidic soils, and shared practical recommendations for enhancing soil health and crop productivity.

Plant protection expert Lakshmipriya Borah explained various biological control methods for managing insect pests and crop diseases, encouraging farmers to adopt eco-friendly and sustainable plant protection practices.

Horticulture specialist Dr Abhimanyu Chaturvedi spoke on the scientific cultivation practices of fruits and vegetables, covering improved production technologies, nutrient management, and best agronomic practices for achieving higher yields and better-quality produce.

During the interactive session, farmers received experts’ guidance on crop management.

As part of the programme, quality seeds of garden pea and cabbage were distributed to all the participating farmers. The seeds were sponsored by the Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan, Almora, to promote vegetable cultivation and enhance farm productivity in the region.

Fifty-seven farmers from Yuthumbu and Dungse villages of Jang-Thingbu block attended the programme. (DIPRO)
