With the term of sitting Rajya Sabha MP Nabam Rebia set to end on June 23, the process for electing Arunachal Pradesh’s lone Rajya Sabha representative has formally begun following the Election Commission’s notification. The last date for filing nominations is June 8, while June 11 has been fixed as the final date for withdrawal of candidature.

Although an actual contest appears unlikely, given the BJP’s overwhelming majority in the State Assembly, the party’s nominee is expected to secure the seat comfortably, if not unopposed. In the event of a contest, polling will be held on June 18, with the counting of votes scheduled for the same day.

The challenge before the BJP, however, lies not in winning the seat but in choosing its candidate. The party is reportedly faced with a crowded field of aspirants, including Environment and Forest Minister Wangki Lowang, incumbent MP Nabam Rebia, Pasighat West MLA Ninong Ering, former ministers Taba Tedir and Tage Taki, and former state BJP presidents Tai Tagak and Tangor Tapak.

Selecting one candidate from among several strong contenders will not be an easy task. Each aspirant brings political experience, organisational strength and regional influence, making the decision particularly delicate. While the BJP has yet to announce its nominee, the choice is far more complicated than it may appear.

The leadership will have to carefully balance merit, experience, loyalty and political considerations. Any decision is likely to leave some disappointed, and managing the fallout will be crucial for maintaining party unity. Whether the BJP ultimately rewards merit, seniority, loyalty, or strategic political calculations remains to be seen.
