PASIGHAT, 6 Oct: An awareness campaign on eri and muga culture technologies was conducted at Rengging village in East Siang district on Monday.
The campaign was part of the extension communication programme of the Research Extension Centre (REC), Sille, and was organised in collaboration with the District Sericulture Department of East Siang. The REC, functioning under the Central Muga Eri Research & Training Institute (CMER&TI), Lahdoigarh (Assam), designed the programme for eri and muga rearers in remote areas who have limited access to formal training in sericulture practices.
Resource person of the programme and Sericulture Assistant Director Talong Tadeng sensitised silkworm rearers to scientific practices related to eri and muga rearing, host plant management, hygienic practices, disease prevention, and the use of improved technologies to enhance productivity.
He encouraged farmers to adopt eri and muga culture as a sustainable source of income and a means of improving livelihoods.
Scientist-B Shilpa Saikia, who conducted the programme, said the REC has been supporting silkworm rearers in the region by providing technical guidance to strengthen their skills and enhance production.
During interactive session, participants gained knowledge on eri and muga culture technologies from the experts.
Som and kesseru seedlings were also distributed among participating farmers, along with leaflets highlighting improved eri and muga culture technologies.
A similar programme had been conducted at Aohali in Mebo subdivision of East Siang district last Sunday.
