The Arunachal Pradesh government has appointed the Hydro Power Development Corporation of Arunachal Pradesh Limited (HPDCAPL) as the executing agency for carbon credit projects.

The corporation will identify, develop, and implement carbon credit projects in sectors such as renewable energy, forestry, solid waste management, methane emission reduction, and other approved sectors. The HPDCAPL became the first organisation in Arunachal to register a project with the Universal Carbon Registry through the Sumbachu small hydroelectric project, marking the state’s entry into the international carbon credit market.

The growing global focus on achieving net-zero emissions has increased the demand for high-quality carbon credits. Therefore, the decision is significant.

Carbon credit projects require rigorous monitoring, verification, and transparency to ensure genuine emission reductions. It is essential that the HPDCAPL, as the executing agency for carbon credit projects, upholds these standards as the norm.

If the project is successful, it will go a long way in supporting the conservation of forests and natural ecosystems in the state, which have come under increasing pressure.
