Arunachal Pradesh achieved a major healthcare milestone with its first-ever kidney transplant performed at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun. The transplant was performed on a 32-year-old patient, with his elder sister donating the organ. Both the donor and recipient are stable following the procedure. The landmark surgery was carried out in collaboration with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), New Delhi. TRIHMS, established in 2018, has been developing its transplant capabilities through a three-year collaboration with SGRH, including training for doctors and nurses.

The government has increased financial assistance under the Chief Minister Arogya Arunachal Yojana (CMAAY) for kidney, bone marrow and liver transplants, with assistance going up to Rs.22 lakh. The government has said the enhanced support is intended to reduce the financial burden on families requiring specialised treatment. The enhanced CMAAY assistance will greatly help families burdened by financial difficulties, as healthcare remains expensive and beyond the reach of many. TRIHMS's latest achievement is a milestone not only for the institute but also a ray of hope for the people of the state, bringing affordable healthcare closer to them.
