YINGKIONG, 7 Sep: The district magistrate of Upper Siang district has imposed restriction under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in the Geku area, following apprehension of a possible law-and-order situation in connection with the pre-feasibility report (PFR) activities for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
The order, issued on 7 September, stated that the administration had received information regarding apprehension of protests and possible unlawful activities in Geku and other villages of Upper Siang district in connection with the proposed SUMP.
Justifying the order, the district magistrate said, "It is also observed that the anti-dam groups of Geku area and other villages in Upper Siang district are very adamant against the proposed SUMP and may likely to resort to threatening, intimidating or may coerce their fellow citizens who are willing to support the government on the proposed PFR activities related to the SUMP in Upper Siang district."
The order was issued on the basis of a letter from local MLA Oni Panyang, drawing the administration's attention to the situation in the area.
Citing the letter, the district magistrate stated that there is apprehension of protests and other activities that could lead to a breach of peace and disturb public order in Geku.
The restriction prohibits assembly of five or more persons, carrying of weapons, unauthorised public meetings, and intimidation, threats or coercion of individuals in connection with the proposed SUMP.
