ITANAGAR, 17 May: The Galo People’s Federation (GPF) has deeply mourned the passing of two distinguished sons of Arunachal Pradesh within three days, saying that their passing has left the state poorer in wisdom and service.

“Dr Bengia Tolum (69) passed away on 14 May, 2026. For four decades he shaped Arunachal’s socio-political and cultural life. As six-term NES president and early ANYA president, he spearheaded the historic ‘Dafla to Nyishi’ nomenclature movement that restored dignity to a community. A scholar and institution builder, he developed the Nyishi script, authored textbooks for Class 6-8, composed patriotic literature, and founded Abotani Academy, Yazali in 1993,” the GPF said in a condolence message.

Twice honoured by the state government, Dr Tolum received an honorary doctorate in 2022 and the NES Lifetime Achievement Award, it said.

“Chosen as first AITF president on 2 September 2010, he worked to unite community bodies on equal footing through dialogue and consensus,” the GPF added.

Retired deputy commissioner Kemo Lollen passed away on 16 May, 2026. Born on 15 April, 1960 in Tadin to late Kike Lollen and late Resok Ngomdir Lollen, he began as a lecturer at IG Government College, Tezu, from 1990-1993, shaping young minds with dedication. “Choosing administration to serve the people, he carried the fragrance of his roots into every office he held – humble, compassionate, and fiercely committed to justice for the last person in the remotest village. To us he was never just deputy commissioner – he was Abo Kemo, Asi Kemo, who listened when others spoke, gave when others withheld, and stood with quiet strength in every storm,” the message read.

“His grace, humility, and integrity touched countless lives. His sudden departure leaves emptiness in Galo homes and in the halls of administration that will be felt for generations.

“The GPF extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and the Nyishi community. May their noble souls rest in eternal peace,” it said.
