ITANAGAR, 9 Jun: The human rights organisations of the state, including the Arunachal Citizens Rights (ACR), Nefa Indigenous Human Rights Organisation (NIHRO), and Global Human Rights Organisation (GHRO), have deeply mourned the demise of prominent human rights activist Yirjum Riram, a founder member of the NIHRO.
Riram, a native of Puak Gumin, Aalo, passed away on Tuesday morning after a brief illness. He reportedly suffered from diarrhoea, followed by vomiting, at around 1 am, and succumbed soon thereafter.
“Riram was a successful businessman who later became a dedicated sponsor and activist of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) during 1993-1997,” informed former AAPSU president Tage Lapung.
Recalling his commitment and sincerity, Bamang Tago, co-founder member of the NIHRO and former AAPSU leader, described late Riram as a man of honesty, a defender against human rights violations, and a friend to people of all ages.
“His contribution towards the protection of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh shall be remembered for years to come. We stand speechless and deeply saddened,” the human rights organisations stated.
“He was a great social worker of the state who dedicated much of his life to the cause of the state and society,” the ACR said.
After graduating from JNC, Pasighat, Riram actively participated in AAPSU activities and served as the union’s finance secretary, and later as adviser.
“During his prime years, he enjoyed far-reaching rapport and goodwill among many prominent leaders and dignitaries of Arunachal Pradesh. His inspiration, guidance, and words of wisdom shall forever remain with us. With his passing, we feel an immense sense of irreparable loss to the state,” said GHRO chairman Goken Bam.
“The blessings and advice of the departed leader Yirjum Riram shall always be cherished and continue to inspire us for generations to come,” said former AAPSU secretary and NIHRO chairman Domin Loya.
“We join in sharing the pain and difficult times with the family members and pray to the almighty god to bestow enough strength to bear this irreparable loss. May the departed human rights activist rest in eternal peace in his heavenly abode,” stated the human rights bodies of the state.
