PASIGHAT, 21 Jun: Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing inaugurated a dedicated livelihood market shed for self-help groups (SHGs) here in East Siang district on Saturday.

The facility has been developed by the district Panchayat Department by renovating and repurposing the erstwhile anchal samiti meat market shed located in the heart of Pasighat town. The structure had remained unused for several years, had fallen into a dilapidated condition, and had been encroached on.

Recognising the need for a permanent marketing platform for SHGs, the Panchayat Department undertook efforts to reclaim and revitalise the premises.

Although SHGs across East Siang have been producing a wide range of quality products, including handloom and handicrafts, bakery items, processed foods and other local produce, the lack of a dedicated sales outlet often limited their market access, forcing them to rely on temporary exhibitions or other establishments to display their products.

Following the completion of encroachment removal proceedings, the building was renovated and transformed into a market shed exclusively for SHGs. The facility has been developed as a ready-to-use marketplace, complete with furnishings and display infrastructure, enabling SHGs to commence operations with minimal investment. The units have been made available at nominal rental rates to ensure affordability and encourage wider participation.

The initiative has been implemented in convergence with the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission, which will facilitate the formation of a collective of SHGs from across the district for the management and operation of the facility.

The inauguration programme was attended by ZPC Ruth Tabing Boko, ADC Pebika Lego, PRI members, SHG members, and other dignitaries. (DIPRO)
