PASIGHAT, 27 May: Anti-drug activist Gumin Mize was granted interim bail by Assam’s Lakhimpur District and Session Court, and he was released from judicial custody on Wednesday.

Meanwhile,  the 12-hr bandh called by the Adi Students Union (AdiSU) and several other local students’ organizations in East Siang district on Wednesday was called off at noon, following Mize’s release.

The bandh was enforced in protest against arrest and alleged custodial torture of Mize by Assam police.

The bandh, which started at 5 am, affected normal life with shops, markets and other business establishments at Ruksin, Sille Oyan, Mebo and Pasighat remaining closed for several hours. Vehicles were also off the roads during that period.

The protesters blocked the national highway-15 and other rural roads at several locations.  However, the bandh ended peacefully with no reports of any bandh-related untoward incidents.
