A high-level discussion was held between Arunachal Pradesh government officials and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on the augmentation and modernisation of the dairy sector in Arunachal. The discussion focused on infrastructure development, breeding improvement, fodder planning, cooperative strengthening, and dairy models suited to the hill ecosystem.
The NDDB informed that a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared to address low cooperative coverage in the dairy sector. The proposal includes the establishment of two new dairy plants, the refurbishment of two existing dairy plants, the formation of dairy cooperative societies and milk unions, and the installation of bulk milk coolers. Additionally, a proposal was discussed for the establishment of a 200-capacity milch cow rearing centre in West Kameng.
The NDDB agreed to support the preparation of a comprehensive state fodder plan, including mineral mapping, in collaboration with the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI). DPRs have already been prepared for the refurbishment of dairy plants in Pasighat and Karsingsa.
Furthermore, the NDDB has proposed adoption of the Ladakh model of dairy development for Tawang and West Kameng, which involves smaller livestock holdings with higher farmer participation.
Dairy production is currently low in the state and remains untapped due to abysmal veterinary services, as well as high maintenance costs. Animals are reared for income, but not on a large scale. With the intervention of the department, this could change, as many farmers need a bit of handholding, financial support, and access to facilities. The recent meeting seems encouraging, and if all the plans are realised, the dairy sector could see major changes.
