ITANAGAR, 18 Jun: Continuous rainfall over the past few weeks has exposed the poor drainage system along the Bage Tinali-Naharlagun road, causing severe waterlogging, damaged roads, and traffic congestion.

This route, located in the Itanagar Capital Region,is one of the busiest roads connecting several residential and commercial areas. Following weeks of heavy rainfall, several portions of the road have remained submerged due to clogged drains and inadequate drainage facilities.

Residents say that the problem is not limited to flooding alone. During heavy rainfall, drainage water overflows onto the road, instead of flowing through proper channels. Along with the water, large amounts of soil, mud, and debris are washed onto the roadway. Over time, this soil accumulates at various locations, reducing the width of the road and making some stretches almost one-way routes. This has led to frequent traffic congestion and increased the risk of accidents.

Motorists and pedestrians have reported difficulties navigating through waterlogged roads and potholes hidden beneath stagnant water. Daily commuters often face long delays, particularly during peak hours, while people struggle to reach their destinations on time.

Local shopkeepers said that the poor road condition affects business activities as customers avoid flooded areas during periods of heavy rain. Residents living near the affected stretch have complained about foul smells, mosquito breeding, and unhygienic conditions caused by stagnant water.

According to residents, the drainage problem has persisted for years despite repeated complaints to the authorities concerned. They believe that poor maintenance, blocked drains, unfinished culverts, and inadequate drainage planning have contributed to the recurring issue.

Experts point out that drainage system should be designed according to the amount of rainfall received in a region, which is measured in millimetres. Since Arunachal Pradesh experiences heavy rainfall most of the months, drainage channels need to be deeper and wider to carry large volumes of water. However, the drainage system along  the Bage Tinali-Naharlagun stretch are too shallow and narrow to handle the heavy runoff during the monsoon season. As a result, water frequently overflows onto roads, causing flooding and further damaging infrastructure.

Officials have stated that construction of culverts, drainage channels, and other protective structures is underway to address the issue. However, residents believe that the pace of work must be accelerated, and that regular maintenance of drainage systems is necessary to prevent future flooding.

Residents have urged the authorities to undertake immediate cleaning of drains, remove accumulated soil and debris, widen drainage channels where necessary, and ensure timely completion of infrastructure projects.  (The contributor is an intern with The Arunachal Times)
