ITANAGAR, 26 Jul: Home Minister Mama Natung flagged off a run from Indira Gandhi Park here on the 27th anniversary of Operation Vijay to pay homage to the Army personnel who made the supreme sacrifice during the conflict in Kargil in 1999.
Before flagging off the ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas Rain Run’, the minister said it was a heartfelt tribute to the war heroes whose unparalleled courage, valour, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations, while serving as a reminder of the collective duty to honour the armed forces.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kento Jini, who also participated in the run, said it was heartening to witness enthusiastic participation of citizens, reflecting the state’s deep respect for the nation’s armed forces.
“As we remember the heroes of Kargil, let us continue to uphold the values of courage, unity, and selfless service that they so valiantly exemplified,” Jini said.
The event, which featured 10 km, 5 km, and 2 km run categories, was organised by the Youth Affairs Department.
Chief Secretary Manish Kumar Gupta and police chief SDS Jamwal were among those who took part in the run.
Meanwhile, the Spearhead Division of the Indian Army on Saturday commemorated the Kargil Vijay Diwas at the Suvidha Kendra in East Siang HQ Pasighat, under SeVA (Spearcorps Empowering Veterans and Aspirants) with solemnity and pride, paying tribute to the courage, sacrifice and indomitable spirit of the brave soldiers who secured India’s victory during Operation Vijay in 1999.
The event was attended by Kargil War veterans, serving soldiers, civil dignitaries, ex-servicemen, students, teachers and members of the local community, reflecting the enduring bond between the armed forces and the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by a documentary on Operation Vijay. The highlight of the event was the inspiring firsthand accounts shared by veterans who had participated in the Kargil War. Their experiences provided the audience, particularly the younger generation, with an opportunity to understand the realities of military service and the enduring values of courage, discipline and selfless service.
Addressing the gathering, the deputy commander of the Spearhead Gunners emphasised that the legacy of Kargil continues to inspire every soldier serving on India’s frontiers today. He highlighted that the same spirit of patriotism, professionalism and sacrifice remains the cornerstone of the Indian Army.
As a mark of gratitude, Kargil War veterans were felicitated during the ceremony. Winners of an inter-school drawing competition organised as part of the commemoration were also honoured, and the paintings remained on display throughout the programme.
The event concluded with interaction between the veterans and students, inspiring the youths through firsthand accounts of courage and service to the nation. (PTI, with DIPRO input)
