ITANAGAR, 14 Jun: Retired IAS officer Repo Ronya emerged champion of the 2nd State Level Veteran Chess Championship, securing 5.5 points out of 7 to claim the title.
The two-day event concluded on Sunday at the Nefa Chess Club, Itanagar.
The championship, held from 13-14 June, featured seven rounds in a rapid format with 25 minutes per game and no increment. Prof Rejum Ronya finished second, while
Tasso Tai secured the third position. Niapung Konia and Padi Kambo finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to qualify for prizes.
Attending the event, Arunachal Pradesh Chess Association (APCA) secretary Tamchi Kache highlighted the importance of the event in promoting chess across the state.
“This competition will help in promoting the game in the state by encouraging and motivating young players and kids,” Kache said.
APCA president Niapung Konia noted the rapid growth of chess in Arunachal, with increasing participation of youngsters and support from parents. He described the veterans’ championship as a tribute to senior players.
“Chess in Arunachal Pradesh is developing at a rapid pace. The veterans’ competition, wherein only those who are 50 years and above participate, holds significance as they are the backbone of this association, as they formed and nurtured it,” Konia said.
He thanked the veterans for their “contributions, hard work, and sacrifices that have enabled the state’s chess enthusiasts to compete at national, regional, and international levels.”
The event was organised by Kojum Lollen (organising secretary) and Dr Taga Nalo (chairman), with international arbiter Tapi Shah serving as the chief arbiter.
The successful conduct of the championship underscores the growing popularity of chess in the state and the vital role played by veteran players in strengthening the game’s foundation.
