ITANAGAR, 23 Jul: The first veterinary polyclinic of the state was inaugurated at Abotani Colony here on Thursday by Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, along with Chief Secretary Manish Kumar Gupta.
The polyclinic has been established as a modern referral veterinary healthcare facility to strengthen animal health services in the Itanagar Capital Region and adjoining areas. The project was undertaken at a total cost of Rs 320 lakh and was executed by the Urban Development & Housing Department’s Itanagar division.
The polyclinic has been designed to provide a comprehensive range of specialised veterinary services, including advanced clinical diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases, surgery, emergency veterinary care, laboratory diagnostic services, animal birth control (ABC) services, and technical advisory and extension support to livestock farmers and pet owners.
The facility will also play a pivotal role in disease surveillance, early disease detection, epidemiological investigations, and rapid response to animal health emergencies, thereby strengthening the state’s veterinary public health system.
The facility will also serve as the state nodal centre for the implementation of the ABC programme in the capital region, facilitating humane management of stray dog populations in accordance with the ABC Rules, 2023, and supporting compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court of India on addressing the stray dog issue while ensuring animal welfare and public safety.
Talking to the media, Wangsu said that soon X-ray and ultrasound machines will also be installed in the polyclinic. “We have qualified doctors who will operate these machines once they are installed. As the first dedicated referral veterinary healthcare facility in the state, it will substantially improve access to quality veterinary services for livestock, companion animals and other domestic animals in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) and surrounding districts. This polyclinic will immensely benefit all the pet owners of the ICR,” said the minister.
IMC Mayor Likha Nari Tadar, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Secretary YVVJ Rajasekhar, DIGP Tumme Amo, and officials of Veterinary and Urban Development Departments were present on the occasion.
