GEKU, 8 Jun: Two days after 110 households in Geku in Upper Siang district signed an MoU in support of the pre-feasibility report (PFR) preparation for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), angry anti-dam supporters on Monday allegedly vandalised the houses of those who signed the agreement, including that of local MLA Oni Panyang.
According to sources, the houses of more than 24 individuals were damaged by the agitated protesters.
The situation in the area remains tense. “There was a meeting of anti-dam supporters in the morning, and after the meeting, the crowd went on a rampage and damaged properties. So far, no FIR has been lodged, and the authorities are trying to calm the situation,” said an official.
Ever since news of the signing of the MoU in support of the PFR became public, anger had been growing in the area.
“The anti-dam supporters feel betrayed by this act. They believe the government is trying to divide the people by luring them with certain packages,” said a resident.
Last Saturday, 110 households in Geku in Upper Siang district signed an MoU in support of the PFR for the SUMP in the presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, and MLAs Ninong Ering and Oni Panyang.
