TAWANG, 29 Jul: As part of the ongoing efforts to promote scientific waste management and achieve a cleaner, greener, and sustainable Tawang township, an awareness programme on the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Guidelines, 2026 was conducted at Old Market here on Wednesday.

The programme was held in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Nawang Thutan, members of the Women’s Welfare Association (WWA), the secretaries of Old Market and Nehru Market, market welfare committee members, the material recovery facility (MRF) operator, officials of the Urban Affairs Department, local shopkeepers, and residents.

The awareness programme focused on the implementation of four-way waste segregation at source, and highlighted the responsibilities of bulk waste generators under the SWM 2026 framework. The participants were sensitised to proper segregation of biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous, and sanitary waste, along with scientific waste management practices aimed at reducing environmental pollution and improving public sanitation.

Addressing the gathering,

Thutan emphasised that effective solid waste management “begins with individual responsibility.”He urged all shopkeepers, business establishments, and residents to strictly adopt source segregation and cooperate with the district administration in making Tawang a model town for cleanliness and sustainable waste management.

Old Market Welfare Committee secretary Dawa Tashi appealed to all traders to actively support the implementation of the SWM guidelines by ensuring proper segregation of waste and reducing the use of single-use plastic.

Members of the WWA, the MRF operator, and officials of the Urban Affairs Department also addressed the participants, highlighting the importance of community participation, responsible waste disposal, and efficient recycling for protecting the environment.

As part of the programme, cloth shopping bags were distributed among the participants to encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives and support the ongoing campaign to eliminate single-use plastic from daily market activities.

The district administration appealed to all citizens, market associations, and business establishments to actively participate in the waste management initiative and adopt sustainable practices to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and environmentally responsible Tawang. (DIPRO)
