ANINI, 2 Jun: The Panchayati Raj Department in Dibang Valley district organised a district-level workshop on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, here on Tuesday.
Among the attendees were Deputy Commissioner Bekir Nyorak, ZPM Eta Mihu, ZPM Siyo Mihu, HoDs, member secretaries, and PRI members.
Addressing the participants, District Panchayat Development Officer (DPDO) Lijum Ete presented the district’s preparedness and action plan for effective implementation of the rules.
The deliberations focused on strengthening waste management systems in rural areas in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court, with emphasis on coordinated and sustainable efforts.
The DPDO directed the PRI members to identify and geographically map campsites and other vulnerable locations prone to solid waste accumulation by 31 October. He also called for panchayats to promote source segregation and responsible waste disposal practices.
Further, the authorities concerned were instructed to conduct detailed surveys and submit proposals for scientific solid waste management and door-to-door waste collection systems to ensure cleaner and healthier villages across the district.
The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to advance sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship throughout Dibang Valley.
In Changlang, the Public Relations Department conducted a district-level meeting with panchayat representatives on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 in gram panchayats, and on creating awareness regarding waste segregation at source, on Tuesday.
The meeting was chaired by Changlang Deputy Commissioner Vishal Sah, and was attended by the ZPC, all ZPMs, GPCs, the PHED EE, and other officials.
A detailed presentation on the SWM Rules, 2026 was delivered by ADC Marpe Riba, highlighting the key provisions of the rules applicable to rural local bodies (RLBs). Riba stated that implementation of the rules is mandatory as per the directions of the Supreme Court of India.
He emphasised the need for timely submission of compliance reports and advocated promoting plastic-free gram panchayats, noting that plastic waste poses one of the greatest threats to environmental health.
The DC in his address called upon all elected representatives to adopt at least one village and develop it as a model village to inspire others. He sought active cooperation from all stakeholders, and stressed the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring effective waste management and environmental protection.
ZPC Remjung Jugli urged the elected representatives to be proactive leaders, influencers, and role models in promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability. He emphasised on safeguarding a clean and liveable environment for future generations, and assured of full cooperation from the RLBs in the implementing the SWM Rules, 2026 in letter and spirit.
During the meeting, the District-Level Special Cell Committee for Rural Local Bodies, headed by the ZPC, was also constituted in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from all stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the SWM Rules, 2026, and to promote sustainable waste management practices across the district. (DIPROs)
